StartupBase Platform Help

Helps the user submit to, optimize listings on, and get the most from StartupBase — a community-driven startup discovery platform where makers and early adopters share and discuss products.

Step 1 — Gather context

If references/learnings.md exists, read it first for accumulated knowledge.

Ask the user:

  1. What do you need help with?

- A) Submitting a product to StartupBase - B) Understanding the backlink value (DR39 dofollow) - C) Understanding the review queue and timing - D) Comparing StartupBase with other directories - E) Something else — describe it

  1. What's your product?

- A) SaaS / software tool - B) AI tool / ML product - C) Mobile app - D) Browser extension - E) Hardware / IoT - F) Something else

  1. What's your primary goal?

- A) SEO backlinks (dofollow) - B) Community visibility and early adopters - C) Newsletter exposure (Spark newsletter) - D) All of the above

If the user's request already provides most of this context, skip directly to the relevant step. Lead with your best-effort answer using reasonable assumptions (stated explicitly), then ask only the most critical 1-2 clarifying questions at the end.

Step 2 — Route or answer directly

If the request maps to a different skill, route:

  • Multi-directory launch strategy → /sales-launch-directory
  • Product Hunt launch → /sales-producthunt
  • Email marketing to subscribers → /sales-email-marketing
  • Landing page optimization → /sales-checkout
  • Audience growth strategy → /sales-audience-growth
  • Other specific directory platforms → hand off to that platform's skill

Otherwise, answer directly from the StartupBase reference below.

When StartupBase makes sense

Good fit:

  • You want a free dofollow backlink (DR39) with minimal effort
  • You're launching a tech product (SaaS, AI, mobile app, hardware, browser extension)
  • You're doing a broad directory submission sweep and want cumulative backlinks
  • You have time to wait 2-3 months for the free queue

Not ideal:

  • You need instant listing — use ProductBurst, SoloPush, or JustGotFound instead
  • You need high-DR backlinks — Fazier (DR81), Uneed (DR74), or Product Hunt (DR91) are better
  • Your product isn't tech-focused — StartupBase only accepts technology startups
  • You need traffic — ~260 monthly visits means negligible referral traffic

Step 4 — Actionable guidance

For users submitting (free tier)

  1. Create an account via Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook at startupbase.io
  2. Prepare materials — product name, description, screenshots, working product URL on a custom domain
  3. Ensure you meet all criteria — tech startup, public product, professional website, newsletter signup on your site
  4. Submit via the submission page on startupbase.io
  5. Wait 2-3 months for editorial review (first-come, first-served)
  6. Add UTM tracking: ?utm_source=startupbase&utm_medium=directory&utm_campaign=launch

Note: DR39 dofollow is on the lower end of directory backlinks — higher than JustGotFound (DR23) and Awesome Indie (DR~19-31), but lower than most other directories. The main value is cumulative when combined with other directory submissions.

For users considering premium

Premium listing gets you featured within 24 hours instead of waiting 2-3 months. The pricing isn't publicly listed — contact support@startupbase.io to inquire.

Worth considering if:

  • You're coordinating a multi-platform launch and need timing control
  • The free queue timeline doesn't work for your launch plan

Probably not worth it if:

  • Your primary goal is backlinks — the DR39 backlink value is the same whether free or paid
  • You're budget-constrained — spend on higher-DR platforms like Fazier ($39 for DR81) or Open Launch ($12 for DR65) instead

For multi-directory launchers

StartupBase fits into Phase 3 — Free editorial queues in a multi-directory strategy. Submit on Day 1 alongside other free-queue platforms (CtrlAlt.cc, MicroLaunch, LaunchingNext, Uneed free) and let it go live whenever the review completes. The DR39 backlink adds to your cumulative backlink portfolio. Don't rely on it for traffic — ~260 monthly visits means you'll get single-digit referrals at best.

Gotchas

*Best-effort from research — review these, especially items about features and pricing that may be outdated.*

  • Platform is being redesigned. As of early 2026, StartupBase was undergoing a v2 rebuild (signups were closed until January 31, 2026). The new version may have different features, pricing, or submission processes. Verify current state before submitting.
  • Very low traffic. ~260 monthly visits per LaunchDirectories data. This is primarily a backlink play, not a traffic source. Set expectations accordingly.
  • Social auth only. You must sign in via Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook — there's no email/password option. If you don't have accounts on any of these, you can't submit.
  • Strict tech-only policy. Blogs, online stores, local businesses, courses, and consultancy services are explicitly rejected. No exceptions stated.
  • First-time submissions only. If your product was previously featured on StartupBase, you cannot resubmit it. This differs from platforms like Uneed that allow relaunches.
  • Premium pricing isn't public. The paid featured option exists but pricing isn't listed. Contact support for a quote.
  • Newsletter signup required on your site. StartupBase requires your website to have a newsletter signup mechanism. Products without one may be rejected.
  • Self-improving: If you discover something not covered here, append it to references/learnings.md with today's date.

Examples

Example 1: Submit a SaaS tool for backlinks

User says: "I want to submit my SaaS to StartupBase for SEO backlinks" Skill does:

  1. Explains DR39 dofollow — free but on the lower end of directory backlinks
  2. Walks through submission requirements (tech only, custom domain, social auth)
  3. Notes the 2-3 month free queue wait
  4. Recommends submitting as part of a broader directory sweep for cumulative backlink value
  5. Suggests higher-DR directories (Fazier DR81, Uneed DR74) for primary backlink goals Result: Product submitted with realistic expectations about DR39 value and timeline

Example 2: Evaluate if StartupBase is worth the effort

User says: "Is it worth submitting to StartupBase? The DR seems low" Skill does:

  1. Confirms DR39 is on the lower end — higher than JustGotFound (DR23) but lower than most directories
  2. Explains cumulative backlink value — every dofollow helps, even at DR39
  3. Notes the submission takes 5-10 minutes if you already have materials ready
  4. Points out the 2-3 month queue means it's a set-and-forget play
  5. Recommends it as part of Phase 3 (free editorial queues) alongside higher-value submissions Result: Informed decision with clear tradeoff analysis (low effort, low DR, cumulative value)

Example 3: Figure out why submission was rejected

User says: "My product got rejected from StartupBase, what went wrong?" Skill does:

  1. Reviews the strict selection criteria — tech startup, custom domain, public product, professional website, newsletter signup
  2. Identifies common rejection reasons (not a tech product, subdomain only, no newsletter signup on site)
  3. Recommends fixing the specific issue and resubmitting if it's a first-time submission
  4. Notes that if previously featured, resubmission isn't allowed Result: Clear diagnosis of likely rejection reason with actionable fix

Troubleshooting

Submission stuck in queue for months

Symptom: Submitted weeks/months ago, no update on status Cause: Free queue is 2-3 months with first-come, first-served processing. High submission volume can extend this. Solution: Check your dashboard for status updates. If urgent, consider the premium featured option (contact support@startupbase.io for pricing). Meanwhile, submit to instant-listing platforms (ProductBurst, SoloPush, DevHunt) to get live immediately while waiting.

Can't create an account

Symptom: Unable to sign up for StartupBase Cause: StartupBase only supports social auth (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook) — no email/password option. Also, signups may be temporarily closed during the v2 redesign. Solution: Ensure you're using one of the supported social accounts. If signups are still closed post-January 2026, follow @startupbaseio or @attacomsian on X for reopening announcements. Subscribe to the Spark newsletter for updates.

Product rejected despite being a tech startup

Symptom: Submission rejected even though it's a legitimate tech product Cause: StartupBase has strict criteria beyond "tech startup" — must have custom domain, professional website, newsletter signup, and never been previously featured. Solution: Verify all criteria: (1) custom domain (not just a subdomain), (2) professional website describing features, (3) newsletter signup mechanism on your site, (4) product wasn't previously featured. Fix any gaps and resubmit.
